I really curious, has GM’s 3.8L engine ever come with a manual transmission?

I know there’s different versions of the 3.8L; I believe I have a L26, while the L32 SC is supercharged for my gen Prix. But there has also been a version of a 3800 from GM since ‘62 (Wikipedia says so at least). I mean, did all of them come with automatics?

I really curious if it’s even feasible to connect a manual to my prix, that’s all. :).

Holden Commodores had manuals with the Buick 3.8l V6 , but our cars were RWD not FWD.

all our L67sc V6’s were auto only.

Ah, that would be difficult then, and expensive too. Rats.

3.8 F bodys came with manuals. Never seen a FWD manual though.

So i guess it’s not that feasible then. Well, if that’s the case, i suppose knowing sooner before my hopes get to high will help.

I think guys that swap 3.8s into Fieros sometimes use the stock 5 speed manual as well. Not too sure on the durability of it though. A few also use the manual 6 speed from G6s.

The 3800s have 60-degree bellhousings, so there are a few transmissions that would bolt up. The guys doing this are swapping 3800s into Fieros, so they’re retaining a transverse layout.

You’re looking for either a Getrag 282 or an F40 6-speed...I have no idea how much fabrication would be needed for hooking this up, but the pedal assembly and other parts can likely come out of older W-bodies which had manuals hooked up to the 3.1L engine.

Example: http://www.milzymotorsports.com/f40-6-speed-tr…

“The F40 can be bolted to the following GM engines or anything else that shares the same bellhousing pattern:

2.8L MPFI V6

3.1L MPFI V6

3100 L89 V6

3100LG8 V6

3400 LA1 V6

3500 LX9 V6

3500 LZ4 V6

3800 series II L36 V6

3800 series II Supercharged L67 V6

3800 series III L26

3800 series III Supercharged L32 V6

3900 LZ9 V6”

No, but the Pontiac G6 has the distinction of being a FWD GM shitbox available with a 6-speed manual that is commonly swapped over into supercharged 3800 cars such as the Bonneville, Grand Prix, Buick Park Avenue Ultra, etc. Really not a terribly difficult swap, either, but it’s a hell of a trick to actually find a transmission.

EDIT: I should mention that what you’re looking for is a GM F40 trans.

I'd imagine it can connect to a non SC 3.8 too, right?

Yup. Same bell housing, just not as rewarding. Boost is necessary to wake up the 3800.

Getrag 284 from a Lumina Z34 / Grand Prix GTP (both early nineties). It’s your best bet because the W-body didn’t really change :)
